Edward T. Begay addresses the Huerfano Chapter on July 2, 2002 at a meeting of Navajo IIM account holders with Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in Cobell v. U.S.
The Navajo Nation must continue on the path of progress and responsible government that is trustworthy and based on Navajo tradition. This is the deep rooted belief and foundation upon which Edward T. Begay has built his candidacy.

After 33 year of serving the Navajo Nation in various capacities, Edward T. Begay was elected Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council in 1999. As Speaker, he leads the 88-member Council in formulating, debating and enacting legislation for the Navajo people.

Before his election as Speaker, he served as a Council Delegate for the Churchrock and Breadsprings Chapters for more than 20 years. At various times during Speaker Begay's career as a Council Delegate, he chaired the Advisory Committee, the Budget and

Finance Committee, the Education Committee and the Federal Restructuring Task Force. From 1983-1987, he served the Navajo Nation as Vice-Chairman with then-Chairman Peterson Zah.

Mr. Begay of the Todichiiinii (Bitter Water) and Tl'ogi (Weaver-Zia) clans was raised in the Nose Rock area of what is now called "Superman Canyon" in New Mexico. He graduated from Rehoboth Christian School, attended Calvin College and later graduated from Albuquerque Business College. Before throwing his hat into the political arena, he served a two-year stint in the U.S. Army and ran the Navajo Nation's Data Processing Department for nearly 10 years.

Speaker Begay has two daughters, Sharlene Begay-Platero, who works for the Navajo Division of Economic Development in Window Rock, Arizona, and Sandra Begay-Campbell, who works for Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M.
